Sophie Wakefield Psychotherapy
Welcome - I’m a HCPC/BAAT registered psychotherapist working with adults and children. I aim to create a supportive, collaborative space for you to bring anything you might want to explore
About
I work psychodynamically, with an understanding of how past patterns and early experiences can contribute our present. However, I do integrate other approaches (Compassion Focused Therapy, mindfulness and existential thinking) depending on what might be useful for you. Developing a trusting relationship is at the centre of my practice. No matter what you bring to therapy, I will be alongside you. We can discuss what you’d like gain from the process, and how best to approach our work together.
My training was in art psychotherapy (BA Psychosocial Studies, MA Art Psychotherapy Goldsmiths University of London) - so a range of creative materials are available to use in sessions. Art-making can help us when we feel we might not have the words. We can express feelings, sensations and memories that might feel stuck in our bodies. However there’s no pressure to use the materials and you don’t need any artistic skills - you can use talking, making or both as a means of processing your feelings and thoughts.
I have worked with organisations including St Christopher’s Hospice, Studio Upstairs, Tate, Barts NHS Trust and Queer Death Cafe and have particular experience in relation to dealing with long term health conditions, grief and loss. I am a registered member of Cancer Counselling London and was awarded the Corinne Burton scholarship for art therapy in palliative cancer care.
I understand our lives are shaped within social, cultural and political networks. You may wish to bring feelings related to systems or explore things like identity, difference and exchanges of power in the therapy space. This is welcome. I hold a commitment to making sure my work is informed by anti-oppressive principles and practice.
Services
I offer in-person or online sessions. These last for 50 minutes and cost £65 (sliding scale rates available). I practice from a quiet therapy studio in South London.
I work in keeping with HCPC ethical guidelines, meaning all our work is confidential and I would only share information if I felt yourself or someone else’s safety was at risk. All artwork is stored securely at the therapy space. I keep digitally encrypted records which only I have access to and you may request your clinical notes at any time.
Work may be short or longer term - during our first session we can create an agreement on the basis of what we mutually think might fit and then regularly review our work together as it develops.
I offer an initial 20 minute telephone conversation to discuss working together (and any questions you might have about the process) free of charge. If you have any access or sensory needs please let me know and we can
